Layers of Fear [Game review]

Coming Frictional Games with the concept of "Hide or Be Killed" gave birth to the idea of an unarmed hero running from strange creatures. Slender and Outlast games with running from monsters have been put into permanent production. Five Nights at Freddy’s brought into fashion the faces on the screen screaming at the player. Recently, developers have begun to practice randomly generated levels, which has developed into several not very successful experiments. As a result, the following picture of a horror familiar to the modern player was formed: some creature is running after a psycho hero who cannot respond with anything, and all this is accompanied by cheap jump scares. Exit Layers of Fear was an unexpected and pleasant surprise – it is intended for those who are primarily afraid of sitting in a dark, dark corner listening to creepy, creepy ambient music.

Although you won’t be able to sit in a dark corner here. Having given you a little time to explore the house, the game will take you by the hand and lead you through a series of scary and wonderfully choreographed scenes, carefully closing the doors behind your back, in case you get scared and want to run away. Everything is extremely linear, no one is chasing you, and it’s practically impossible to die here. There is practically no interaction with the world here, you can only read notes and examine objects like in any typical walking simulator, and you will have to solve a couple of simple problems so that it doesn’t get completely boring.

Although you won’t be bored. Despite the https://primespielautomatcasino.co.uk/games/ lack of serious danger for the hero, the game still manages to scare. Essentially we have a clone P.T. We wander along a looped but at the same time constantly changing route. And various devilry accompanies us, mainly tied to games with the environment. They are based on fairly simple rules: something changes right before your eyes, something will happen when you look at the ceiling or somewhere else, and something will happen when you pick up some object. Paintings play a special role. Some of them, with just one quick glance, immediately turn into a terrible mess, giving a sign: drink valerian before turning around.

But even in the calmest moments you still sit in tension. The atmosphere here is kept at the highest level throughout the entire adventure, thanks to the wonderful work with design and sound. The game just looks great Unity, which has long been famous as an engine for cheap trash. Many have already called the game the most beautiful on this engine, and you can’t argue with that. This creation can be safely shown to indie developers as an example of what can be squeezed out of such an engine. As for the sound, the soundtrack here is extremely modest, but every song in it simply sounds wonderful and fits perfectly with what is happening.

And finally, the cherry on the cake – the plot. The story tells of an artist in creative crisis, who has one single goal – to paint a picture. Someone’s portrait, but it’s not clear whose. And not the most rosy events in the hero’s life begin to drive him crazy, which is why the creation of the picture turns into a real hell. And behind him is the terrible tragedy of a creative personality, the story of the hero’s madness, which is surprisingly interesting to watch until the wonderful finale. And I would like to separately note that there are 3 possible outcomes in the game, but the best of them is the one that you simply come to at the end of the game. The rest of the endings are not a reward for attentiveness and not some kind of “ideal” ending that everyone should see, they are simply additions to the story, for which special thanks to the developers.

An unforgettable, wonderfully staged, beautiful and atmospheric horror attraction that plunges you headlong into the abyss of horror and madness. Strictly not recommended: for fans of hiding from chthonic creatures from the ventilation and haters of linear walking simulators. Connoisseurs of atmospheric horror – welcome!. I’ll be waiting for a new game from Bloober Team
